The Houston Texans are coming off of a (9-7) season and a Divisional round playoff loss to the New England Patriots.
After winning the NFC South, the Texans won a wild card playoff game over the Oakland Raiders. However, spotty quarterback play doomed a great defensive effort in the most pivotal moments.
For example, the offense only averaged 17.4 points per game last season. As a result, offensive changes came immediately. Head coach Bill O’Brien got rid of Brock Osweiler after one season in the mix.
Osweiler finished the season with 15 touchdown passes and 16 interceptions. However, it was his lack of playmaking ability in the playoff loss to the Patriots that sealed Osweiler’s fate.
Now, the Texans are looking to take the next step without the help of a proven quarterback. In fact, the quarterback battle between Tom Savage and DeShaun Watson should be one of the most compelling events during NFL training camp.
The Texans Over/under for wins is set at 8.5. They have won 9 games in each of the last 3 seasons. Coincidentally, O’Brien became head coach in 2018. In fact, the Texans have won at least 9 games in 5 out of the last 6 seasons, only failing to do so in 2018.
The biggest loss is definitely Brock Osweiler’s trade to the Cleveland Browns. The Texans are hoping, this is addition by subtraction.
They also waived linebacker Max Bullough and wide receiver Keith Mumphery in the beginning of June.
With the Texans making the playoffs the last 2 seasons, they have a target on their back in the AFC South. If Tom Savage earns the starting quarterback job, it means he out performed DeShaun Watson in training camp.
However, Savage does not have much experience in NFL games. Savage doesn’t even have a touchdown pass in his young career.
Still, the coaching staff believes their young quarterbacks are capable of leading the Texans to another playoff berth.
The Texans have dynamic wide receivers in DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller, in addition to C.J. Fiedorowicz and Ryan Griffin .
Lamar Miller is coming off of a 1,000 yard season and 5 rushing touchdowns, but The Texans only have 8 rushing touchdowns all season. And The addition of Foreman should help with the ground attack
J.J. Watt is also returning from an injury riddled season, but he should be coming back at 100%, thus one of the best defenses should be even better.
. The Texans gave up just 20 points per game last year. If those numbers continue, watch for the Texans to contend for the AFC South again.
2018 Prediction: The defense will be good guaranteed. Perhaps the Best in the NFL: ! If either of their quarterbacks play well, expect 10 wins or more this season.
